After the successful Defense Grid 2 Kickstarter raised $271,726, the developers over at Hidden Path Entertainment created and released Defense Grid: Containment, an expansion for their original tower defense game, Defense Grid: The Awakening. However, they did not reach the stretch goal of $1,000,000 that they needed in order to create the full sequel. But now, after proving that they could deliver on their promises with Defense Grid: Containment, an investor has partnered with Hidden Path Entertainment and fully funded Defense Grid 2! Just look at these happy faces!

Defense Grid 2 will be released in the first half of 2014 and will be available on Steam for PC, Mac and Linux operating systems.

On a personal note, I absolutely loved Defense Grid: The Awakening. I consider it one of the best tower defense games ever created, and I’ve sunk countless hours into it. I really enjoyed the checkpoint system in the game, where a simple keystroke can rewind the clock one checkpoint at a time, and allows you to refine your strategy without having to start the whole level over. The Portal themed expansion, Defense Grid: You Monster, featured a fully voiced GLaDOS who did everything she could to disrupt the player’s progress. Those levels were incredibly fun, and GLaDOS and her mischievous tactics created a lot of memorable moments. Another great thing about Defense Grid: The Awakening is all of the different modes that are available for each level, such as modes where you only have access to specific towers, or reversed versions of the map where the enemies walk in the opposite direction.

As a backer of the Defense Grid 2 Kickstarter, I’m thrilled that Defense Grid 2 has received the green light, and I’ll be looking forward to the sequel’s release in 2014.
