There’s something to be said about the anticipation and the excitement that comes when thinking of E3. It’s the video game industry’s most important event and one that shows off this awesome medium to much of the mainstream media. This year marks the first time Gamer Horizon will be attending E3 and we want to take the time to let you know how we plan on covering this massive event and what that means to you, our readers.
Going to E3 2013 as members of the press is dramatically different from going as a regular attendee, and it’s also twice as hard to be vetted. As a regular attendee (someone who gets in as an employee of a video game company–even retail), you’re delegated to long lines for game demos or even autographs from celebrities. During past E3’s I’ve heard that attendees would line up for close to eight hours just to get autographs from a WWE wrestler, or even four hours just to try out the Wii. Having been a regular attendee myself in the past, I remember how exciting it was to actually step into a world where video games came alive on colossal stages that surrounded you with sight, sound, and, in many unfortunate cases, smell. I remember coming home with huge plastic bags of swag, ranging from t-shirts (from both obscure and popular titles as well) to countless discs, stickers, promo materials, and magazine samples.
Covering E3 2013 as media is not going to be like this. We have to set up appointments with various video game companies before the show actually begins and plan our time accordingly. And if we don’t hear from those companies prior to the show, we have to setup appointments in person on the show floor. It’s a lot of hard work and determination, and since there’s only five of us here at Gamer Horizon, we will be pulling all-nighters throughout the week of E3 2013. Also, because of our limited resources, we have to play to our strengths and I believe that our individual personalities can lend color to our E3 coverage.
E3 2013 is going to be the biggest stage in the history of video games. With the potential release of the next generation PlayStation and Xbox looming on the horizon, there’s no better time for us to be at E3 than this year. We expect both Sony and Microsoft to battle it out within the next few months while Nintendo waits in the shadows for an opportune moment to strike. This year will feel like we’re watching these companies fight gladiatorial battles for your hard earned money, and we’ll be right smack dab in the middle to cover as much as we are able to in order to help with your buying decisions.
Lastly, we want to know what you want covered. As I already mentioned, there’s only five of us here at Gamer Horizon, and we want to make sure that we cover what interests our audience. In addition to this coverage, one of us is actually going to write a little bit about their first time at E3 to give you all a glimpse as to what it means to be a first timer at the biggest show in video games. Think of this as experiencing E3 2013 vicariously through us.
