Gearbox software, the developers of the Borderlands and Brothers In Arms franchises have acquired the Homeworld IP from the THQ bankruptcy auction. Homeworld is the first fully 3D real time strategy game developed for the PC by Relic Entertainment in 1999.

“Gearbox Software has prevailed as the highest bidder in the acquisition of the Homeworld franchise from THQ. Brian Martel, Gearbox Software’s Chief Creative Officer, has great love and respect for Relic’s brilliant, fun and innovative game and personally spearheaded the acquisition.”

“Brian intends as first priority to direct Gearbox’s interest to preserve and assemble the purest form of the original acclaimed and beloved games, Homeworld and Homeworld 2, with the intent of making them accessible on today’s leading digital platforms.”

Relic was founded in 1997 by Alex Garden and Luke Moloney and specialized in PC real-time strategy games such as Homeworld, Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War and Company of Heroes. In 2000, Relic followed up its popular RTS space title with Homeworld: Cataclysm and later released Homeworld 2 in 2003. Sierra Entertainment was the publisher of the Homeworld franchise before developer Relic was acquired by THQ in 2004.

Sega purchased Relic Entertainment for $26.6 million beating out Zenimax (Bethesda) bid for the Company of Heroes developer during the THQ bankruptcy auction.

Homeworld is the story of a species known as the Kushan who lived on the arid planet of Kharak and fought each other for natural resources. One day a satellite found a space ship under the sands of the great desert. The ship carried advanced technologies including a galactic map with two sets of coordinates on it. The first set of coordinates was Kharak, the second set was a planet that had the ancient name of Hiigara, or Home in the Kushan language. After making this great discovery, the Kushan unite and build the “Mothership” that would ferry over 600,000 of their people to this new Homeworld.
