End of a Generation: Evaluating the Xbox 360

A look back at what the Xbox 360 did to and for the gaming community.

As one console generation comes to an end and another one is about to begin, it's time to take a good look at what the Xbox 360 did to and for the gaming community. After owning an Xbox, I was eager to see what Microsoft's next generation console had to offer me, so I bought the Xbox 360 just days after it hit store shelves. I did my research beforehand and found out both what the console had to offer and what games were coming out for it. Satisfied, I saved up and went into this purchase knowing what I was getting myself into. Little did I know there was more to this new platform than what Microsoft had advertised. Microsoft's Xbox 360 console had a wealth of new titles available for it and an online community that kept players coming back, but it also had its fair share of issues. The Dying Lights On November 22, 2005, Microsoft launched its second video game console and called it the Xbox 360. Microsoft launched a year before its chief competitor Sony, giving them an extended

Disney Infinity Review – A promising start

Disney Infinity is a promising start for a potentially long lasting franchise.

When Disney Interactive announced Disney Infinity at the beginning of this year, people were thrilled with the idea of being able to play with various Disney characters in a single world and being able to build adventures with the toys that they provide. This excitement was somewhat confused, however, with the announcement that you won't be able to do this sort of thing in the game's play sets. But in Disney Infinity's Toy Box mode, they say, the sky's the limit. This confusion seemingly prevails with some of the design decisions and the immediate future of Disney Infinity. Regardless of these concerns, Disney Infinity proves that it's here to stay, and serves as a promising start to the future of a long line of figures and games for years to come. Real world collectibles The Disney Infinity Starter Kit includes the game and a play set cube that contains three play sets, with three figures also packed in representing each of the included play sets: Mr. Incredible, representi

The Bureau XCOM Declassified - Carter

The Bureau: XCOM Declassified Review – First Encounter

The Bureau: XCOM Declassified offers a different type of challenge for saving Earth in the XCOM universe.

Originally set in the 1950's and 1960's, The Bureau: XCOM Declassified has been in development since 2006. The Bureau was first pitched as cross between the original XCOM and the X-Files. The game was originally supposed to have a base development mechanic and multiplayer, but over the years, the game's design and vision shifted,. What 2K Games delivered is an origin story for the XCOM Initiative set in 1962. The game ended up being a third person tactical shooter with a "battle focus" mechanic, and a relentless enemy who has their sights set on taking Earth. With The Bureau pushing a seven year development cycle, it is finally worth the wait or should consumers keep on looking? The XCOM Initiative The story of The Bureau: XCOM Declassified centers around a secret alien invasion of Earth during 1962. The United States Bureau of Strategic Emergency Command has been looking into strange occurrences around the U.S. and have concluded that humanity is under attack by an unknown alien

What’s Up Weekend for 8/23/2013 to 8/25/2013

It’s a fantabulous Friday, which means it’s another edition of What’s Up Weekend, by your friends here at Gamer Horizon!

It's freakin' Friday, which means another brand new edition of What's Up Weekend! This week's been quite challenging, given that so many games came out, but we're all hanging on and making sure we're caught up with our games so that we can deliver you all reviews and impressions of some of the hottest games out right now! At any rate, without any further ado, here's what everyone's going to be up to this weekend! Ari Assuming I find time for games this weekend (unlikely), I'll start playing through Memoria, and that will be my focus for the following week (assuming Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn doesn't completely derail that plan). Sorry, The Last of Us, you'll just have to wait. Ted It's a Vitavalooza! I made up that word. Alliteration. Divekick is great, but if you haven't downloaded Killzone Mercenary Open Beta, DO IT. I will be playing the crap out of it. It is so good. Chris I should be finished with The Bureau: XCOM Declassified soon and once that is done, I

Destiny’s newest ViDoc takes you Out Here in the Wild

Destiny’s newest ViDoc takes you Out Here in the Wild

Bungie’s new ViDoc for Destiny gives the viewer a first hand look at what priorities the developer has set for their game.

Bungie, the former creators of all things Halo, have released a new video documentary for their next magnum opus, Destiny. The ViDoc, titled "Out Here in the Wild," talks about the major priorities Bungie set for the game world, the characters, and the players when making Destiny. Their number one priority was to create a world players wanted to be in, explore, and come back to time and time again. Destiny will take players from Earth to the Moon, Mars, Venus, Saturn and introduce them to strange areas and creatures they have never seen before. The character classes Bungie will introduce in the game are the Hunter, Warlock, and Titan. Each will have their own unique abilities to dispatch enemies with. The characters class and race will also determine how that character develops during gameplay. Bungie has decided to go with a three weapon slot instead of the two weapon slot like in Halo to give the player more options when fighting. The slots will consist of the primary weapon slot

The Top 5: Most underappreciated games

This week, the Gamer Horizon crew lists their The Top 5: Most underappreciated games.

After talking about games that disappointed us, we decided it was time to sing the praises of those games that most people don't talk about but they should. The Top 5: Most underappreciated games shall commence in 3, 2.... Alex - 5. Journey to Silius - Overshadowed by both Batman and Blaster Master for the NES, Journey to Silius was a fairly short yet difficult game that had awesome music and thematic elements very similar to Terminator… well, if Terminator was primarily set in the future when an older John Connor was fighting SkyNet. Sure, the boy controlled almost like the tank in Blaster Master, but the things that they did with the tilesets, coupled with the fantastic music, will always be something I’ll remember of that game. Here’s some of those tunes I was talking about: httpvh://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dNCrpIL2XlY 4. Power Blazer - Power Blazer is the Japanese version of Power Blade, a game released in the United States where the publishers (or was it the developers?)

Death is coming in the Diablo III: Reaper of Souls cinematic trailer

Death is coming in the Diablo III: Reaper of Souls cinematic trailer

Find out how the story continues in the Diablo III: Reaper of Souls cinematic trailer.

Let's face it, Diablo III didn't have the best storyline. But after watching this cinematic trailer (the introduction) for Diablo III: Reaper of Souls, I can't help but to jump on board the hype train and I am looking forward to seeing how this story plays out. With any luck the expansion will tell a better tale, though it has only a single Act to do so. No One Can Stop Death The lords of hell rage within the Black Soulstone, their souls screaming for vengeance and release. Before the artifact can be sealed away forever, Malthael–Angel of Death–manifests in the mortal realms with a deadly new purpose: to steal the Black Soulstone and bend its infernal power to his will. So begins the end of all things...

"Death, at last, shall spread its wings over all…" A presence more sinister than any demon hangs over Sanctuary…. It watched from the shadows as a hero of nephalem lineage struck down Diablo, the Prime Evil, and trapped the demon lord within the Black Soulstone. It waited in silence as the mortal armies of Sanctuary crushed the leaderless remnants of the Burning Hells and scattered them into the stinging winds of Kehjistan. Now, as hope springs anew, its long vigil has ended. Shrouded in mystery and imbued with a power as ancient as the universe itself, it comes to the war-torn world of Sanctuary. It cannot be stopped. There is no escape. In its wake, only death will remain

Call of Duty: Ghosts Multiplayer

Call of Duty: Ghosts multiplayer brings changes, improvements, and a few concerns

On the surface, Call of Duty: Ghosts’ multiplayer may seem like very little has changed, but looking closer reveals a lot of changes that could be great… but there are areas of concern as well.

Infinity Ward and Activision revealed at an E3-quality press conference details about this year's iteration of multiplayer for Call of Duty: Ghosts and, I have to admit, after being somewhat underwhelmed with what I saw at E3, I'm finally excited for Call of Duty again. While the moment- to-moment gameplay-twitch shooting, fast paced gun-on-gun combat, the use of perks and killstreaks remains intact - the additions being made are plentiful and inspired. The whole event, focused on just Ghosts' multiplayer, was packed to the brim with tons of information as Mark Rubin, Executive Producer of Call of Duty: Ghosts, and the team at Infinity Ward unveiled new game modes like Cranked and Search and Rescue, and new features like fully customizable player characters and a new perks system; it's all a lot to take in and talk about. Rather than rattle what is being changed in the game, I decided I wanted to discuss how these new elements cause excitement and concern. Create-A-Soldier Creat

Both factions believe in their own causes and are willing to go to any length to achieve their goals. Barron Northcrest is a man who believes in the fires of industry and progress. “This city will not die with the old and the poor holding it back. The time has come for a new future.” Orion is the voice of the people who wants a return to the old ways. “No more will our homes be taken and our families starved. This City belongs to the people. We must seize it back.” Garrett is caught in the middle of this growing divide that threatens to tear the city apart. There is a revolution coming and Garrett must walk a fine line that separates politics, the people and his own beliefs. Thief launches early nex

The Top 5: Most disappointing games

Ever get burned by expectations? Welcome to the Top 5: Most disappointing games.

We've all been there. Looking forward to game or even interested in a game's potential only to get you hands on the game and have it completely disappoint or fail to live up to your expectations. This week, we honor those games and those feelings with The Top 5: Most disappointing games. Let the tears commence: Alex - 5. Amy - The ideas behind Amy were completely sound. In fact, much of the game’s premise, story, and even its downloadable nature and price point were all appealing. The problem came when the game actually came out, and it turned out to be a complete mess. Shoddy controls, uneven lighting and contrast in areas, and terrible frame rates plagued your gaming experience in every turn. I don’t normally mind frame rate drops and hitches, but when it affects your gameplay that’s when I draw the line. 4. Max Payne 3 - Surprised that a Rockstar Game made it to my list? I am too, given that I wasn’t really looking forward to this game. I got totally sold on its ideas,

Diablo III Expansion - Teaser

5 ways the Diablo III expansion could improve upon its predecessor

Love it or hate it, Diablo III had some issues. Here are some things Blizzard could do to make the recently teased Diablo III expansion a better game.

I might be in the minority here, but I actually enjoyed Diablo III. Sure, it had its issues—hence this list—but overall I found a lot to enjoy about Blizzard’s third game in the Diablo series. Since the game’s launch I have played around 225 hours and I have a couple of level 60 characters. Granted, that’s not all that impressive compared to the elite of the Diablo III community that have managed not only to get multiple characters to level 60, but to also level up an additional 100 times through the Paragon system! Still, I think I’ve played my fair share of the game, so here are 5 ways I hope the Diablo III expansion pack will be an improvement upon its predecessor: Random Maps with Random Boundaries There are a few ways that Diablo III was a step back from Diablo II. One notable example is that in Diablo II the maps felt VERY random, but in Diablo III it was easy to become familiar with the many areas of the game. This is mainly due to a change in how the maps were

Upcoming Xbox 360 Season Passes to apply to Xbox One versions

Microsoft announces a way to make your Xbox One purchase of the same game more palatable.

In another post on the official Xbox blog, Microsoft announced that they will be honoring Xbox 360 Season Pass purchases of Call of Duty: Ghosts and Battlefield 4 on the Xbox One should players decide to upgrade (read: double dip) to the next generation versions this holiday. This comes as a welcome sign for people who want to play the games and experience Season Pass content that's released before the Xbox One's release date. Microsoft had this to say about their initiative: Season Pass Guarantee makes transitioning from Xbox 360 to Xbox One an easier and smoother process, so you don’t have to worry about which console you’re playing games on or repurchasing your existing add-ons on Xbox One. Microsoft identified that the biggest publishers, including Activision, Electronic Arts and Ubisoft are all lined up and supporting this initiative, with more to announce as they near the holiday season. Honestly, this is one of the most forward thinking moves Microsoft has ever done

Morrigan plays significant role in Dragon Age: Inquisition but not with you

Morrigan returns in Dragon Age: Inquisition and she will play an important role in the new game but will not be joining the players party.

Morrigan returns to Dragon Age: Inquisition as a non playable character. Bioware's Mike Laidlaw confirmed to Game Informer that Morrigan will not join the player's party but will play a significant role in the game. Bioware writer David Gaider explains, "she has this big plot she's involved in, and while that's true to an extent, I'm taking her to a human place. That will make sense after the fact." To hear that Morrigan plays a significant role in Dragon Age: Inquisition is interesting as she played a big role in Dragon Age: Origins as well and even had her own DLC titled Dragon Age: Origins: Witch Hunt. I played through Dragon Age: Origins and loved every minute of it. I also romanced Morrigan throughout the game and it wasn't easy. At the end of Origins, Morrigan goes off on her own, leaving the party and the player wondering where she went. In the Witch Hunt DLC, Morrigan returns two and a half years later seeking the player's aid in stopping another blight before it gets starte

No Kinect Needed

Kinect is no longer mandatory, so why do I still have to pay for it?

Microsoft has confirmed that the Kinect is no longer required for the Xbox One. So why not release without it and get to a competitive price point?

When Microsoft unveiled the Xbox One there was a lot of derision on the part of the core gamers. Blocking used games, an always online connection being required, manditory check-ins, mandatory Kinect functionality and of course the price point. Since then, one by one, Microsoft has changed course making it a more consumer and, more specifically, console gamer friendly console. Used games are now OK with the caveat being that despite a mandatory install for each game, the disc must still be in the console to use it. They also did away with the online requirement. No longer will we need to check in as some sort of probationary case making sure the game we are playing wasn't in our possession through ill-gotten means. We don't need your Kinect control On a recent NeoGAF poll asking what it would take to get the community to change their mind about Xbox One, a resounding majority of those that took part cited the mandatory Kinect and the price-point as the final obstacle. The logic b

As the drought of the summer finally ends, a new What’s Up Weekend appears to signal the end of the week. Find out what the crew will be playing and let us know what you plan on playing this weekend!

Happy Friday and welcome to another exciting edition of What's Up Weekend, a place where the Gamer Horizon crew signs off for the weekend and does things that may or may not have something to do with our site! As I've mentioned before, weekends are important to the Gamer Horizon crew, which is why we tend to avoid posting articles on the site during that time. We know this is the opposite of how you might think websites should function, but with only the five of us working on this site and our focus on quality content, we'd much rather take some time off and get recharged so that we can come back on Monday and deliver some incredible new content on the site to be released during the week! That being said, we have an awesome surprise for you when you come back to our site this Monday and are welcomed by next week's On The Horizon. Be sure to look forward to that! At any rate, here's what's up on everyone's agenda this weekend! Ari I got the apartment! So this weekend I will be

Zatanna readies her magic for Injustice

Zatanna readies her magic for Injustice

Zatanna is coming to Injustice; hopefully your controls aren’t reversed when you play her. Get it? Ehhh…

On August 13, Zatanna will be released for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions of Injustice: Gods Among Us. As with previous DLC characters, her existence was heavily rumored before it became confirmed as true. I'm definitely getting a Kung Lao vibe from Zatanna, and it's not just the hat. I wonder if that teleport at 30 seconds in is actually a parry/counter. Also, that's one hell of a divekick at 45 seconds. It also looks like the hat itself is part of either a stance mechanic ala Gen, or some kind of trait. I'm guessing on the latter. It seems like with the hat off, she is a rushdown character, and with it on, she is keepaway/zoner. A hybrid character like this hasn't really been done in Injustice to my recollection. Looks fun, especially that weird split counter thingy to Grundy's super. One thing that surprises me is that this trailer doesn't show the free skin we'll get as part of the compatibility pack. Every DLC character for Injustice is accompanied by a free skin,

Brothers Branch Co-Op

Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons Review – A beautifully grim fairy tale

Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons is remarkably simple in its design and premise and surprisingly dark and mature in it’s story. Coupled together, Starbreeze have crafted one of the best games of the year.

With its elegant fantasy world, remarkable sense of scope and variety and 6 button control scheme, Starbreeze and Swedish film director, Josef Fares have crafted a magnificent adventure that is both a welcome change of pace and almost serves as a thesis on the language and the over complication of the general design of video games. Starbreeze's Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons uses the simplicity of its design woven with the gamer's understanding of the language of video games to amazing effect and deliver one of the most pleasurable, poignant and memorable gaming experiences I have ever had. Something wicked this way comes.... The premise of Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons is as simple as it gets. After their father takes ill, two brothers must set off on adventure to retrieve the “Water of Life” from a mystical tree in a far off land. Along the way the two brothers will need to work together to navigate the treacherous landscape and use their ingenuity to solve environmental puzzles.

This decision has piqued the interest of at least 20 different companies including Sega. With the proceedings under way, Index Holdings will be selecting candidates based on bid prices by the end of the week. Each setting offers different challenges with the game's YOLO "You Only Live Once" or permadeath aesthetic of The Bureau. When a squad mate goes down, they are incapacitated and will bleed out and die if the player or a member of the squad doesn't get to them in time. Magic 2014: DotP Review – Disappointing, but buy it anyway

It’s got a pile of problems, but Magic 2014: Duels of the Planeswalkers is still plenty of Magic: The Gathering for a small investment.

You may find this to be an odd review. In the following paragraphs I will harp on about everything that is wrong with Magic 2014: Duels of the Planeswalkers—and it is no short list—and then slap a number at the bottom that will surely insult the developers of the game and hardcore fans of the community alike. Then, with utmost sincerity and without the slightest trace of hypocrisy, I will actually suggest that you buy the game anyway. Ready? Here we go… Curse of Misfortunes There is something wrong with almost every aspect of Magic 2014: Duels of the Planeswalkers. Whether it’s the campaign, multiplayer, the new sealed mode or even the puzzling challenge mode, it’s hard to play the game without noticing things that simply could have been done better. The series is supposed to be the perfect starting point for players new to Magic: The Gathering while also providing enough depth to keep veteran players entertained for hours on end, but sadly, it does a good job of neither.

On The Horizon: Terraria Collector’s Edition

This week, we’ve got Terraria Collector’s Edition, a contest from one of our friends that you’ll surely want to join in, and a brand new podcast!

Happy Monday everyone! Welcome to a brand new edition of On The Horizon, where we talk about what's going on this week in the world of gaming and, of course, what kinds of content we'll be providing on the site for your viewing pleasure. This week, we'll be seeing the release of the Terraria Collector's Edition bundle. While the game has been out for multiple platforms, the Collector's Edition will include a USB key, crafting map, and three character posters. Most notably, between the PS3 and Xbox 360, the latter will be the only one of the two receiving a physical release with the PS3 edition being a digital only release. Now, I've only played Terraria for a short while, but I really appreciated its depth and its comparisons to Minecraft. Since it's also coming out on mobile devices, I'll be sure look out for that version once it comes out later in the summer. In the meantime, here's a trailer! httpvh://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QslsS0JcIzo   This week on Gamer Horizon,

Chase down the enemy in the next The Bureau: XCOM Declassified live action video

Agent Ennis Cole chose to live on and decided to chase down the enemy as a Bureau Agent, but he is not out of danger yet.

After losing his wife and son during an alien attack in a small town in Pima, New Mexico, Agent Cole is out in the field chasing down the enemy. This latest video, titled The Chase, shows what lengths a husband, father, and Bureau agent will go through to get the job done. As Agent Cole closes in, we are left wondering whether he is the hunter or the hunted. I'm interested to see if Agent Cole will fail or succeed at his mission and whether or not he will be in the actual game. After watching Burn Room, the first video in the series, I was secretly hoping 2K would make more. Next came Orbit and the Asteroids, The Choice, The Decision, and now, The Chase.

Agent Cole’s ultimate decision

Agent Cole’s ultimate decision

Dominic Monaghan as Agent Cole makes up his mind on what he plans to do in the “Decision” for The Bureau: XCOM Declassified.

Agent Cole prepares a detailed report on the alien attack and the actions taken for his superiors at The Bureau. That was the previous video titled "Choice" which gave viewers the choice of having Agent Cole grab his gun or the bottle of alcohol. The viewers decision was tweeted to 2K Games and 2K Marin. With all the votes tallied, the video released today titled "Decision" continues the report Agent Cole was working on and his ultimate decision on the matter. 2K explains that the voting was close but one outcome was chosen as the winner and here it is. Watch the "Decision" Agent Cole makes for The Bureau: XCOM Declassified. After watching the video myself, I'm happy with the decision I made in the last video. I know there will be a lot of people out there that made a different choice on the matter but they were ultimately out voted. The next video in the series will be released this Friday July 26. Stay tuned to see what happens next.

The Top 5: Characters in video games

This week Gamer Horizon presents The Top 5: Characters in video games.

What's up gamers? It's that time again. The Top 5: characters in video games and this week Ari's back! So let's not waste any more time. Let's see how everything stacks up, shall we? Alex - 5. (TIE) Commander Shepard (Mass Effect series) and Alex Mason (Call of Duty: Black Ops) I really couldn’t decide who of the two I should put on my number 5 slot, but I do realize why they were both considered: Both characters helped immerse players into their world. It also helped that both Commander Shepard and Alex Mason are great at what they do. The choices players made in Mass Effect, coupled with allowing them to customize their Shepard, and the inclusion of an engaging narrative and a reactive first person protagonist in Call of Duty: Black Ops, pulled gamers all over into their respective narratives. 4. Sackboy (or Sackgirl? - LittleBigPlanet series) Sack of beans. Crocheted champion. Crossdresser. Everything Sackboy does is cute, filled with charm, and with tenacity. With more than

Eidos Montreal boss divorces Square Enix

Stephane D’Astous, the man who helped found Eidos Montreal has left the company due to irreconcilable differences with Square Enix.

Stephane D’Astous, the founder of Eidos Montreal and its boss has sighted irreconcilable differences between himself and Square Enix. These differences led to D'Astous resigning his position at the company he helped create. D'Astous made a statement blaming Square Enix for the "lack of courage and lack of communication" that led to his decision. Let's face it, Square Enix has had a bad couple of years. Blaming games the Tomb Raider reboot and the lack of Hitman sales for the companies poor shape led Square Enix's CEO to resign. The company soon went on an internal restructuring gambit that saw D'Astous moved to a new role focused on cross-studio operations and Eidos Montreal given the dubious responsibility of mobile and tablet gaming responsibilities. This left David Anfossi, the producer of Deus Ex: Human Revolution as the boss of Eidos Montreal. "Since last year’s financial short-coming performance of Square Enix Europe, we (HQ London and GM Eidos-Montreal) have had growing a

Agent Cole’s ultimate choice

Agent Cole’s ultimate choice

Hobbit makes the ultimate decision in The Bureau: XCOM Declassified. 2K’s new video “Agent Ennis Cole: The Choice” features Dominic Monaghan as Agent Cole.

The latest video for The Bureau: XCOM Declassified titled "Agent Ennis Cole: The Choice" features a very familiar face as one of Agent Carter's squad mates. Dominic Monaghan, one of the actors from the hit TV show Lost and the academy award winning Lord of the Rings stars as Agent Cole in this new video. Agent Cole is writing up a report detailing the events in which a titan attacks a town and what The Bureau did to contain the incident. At the end of the video, two choices come up asking the viewer to pick one. The choices involve what future actions Agent Cole will take and the results are tweeted through your twitter account to your friends and 2K Games. This new video takes the story in an interesting direction and I can't wait to see more. When I first saw Meriadoc Brandybuck (Meri) from The Lord of the Rings, I almost didn't recognize him. After watching the entire video over again, there was no mistaking it; it was him.

Copperhead vs Batman

Copperhead vs Batman

The once male super villain Copperhead is now a female assassin for hire in the upcoming Batman: Arkham Origins developed by Warner Bros. Montreal.

I don't know much about the villain Copperhead except that he was a male contortionist who wore a snake costume and was basically a thief. I remember seeing him in the Justice League cartoons but that's it. He was eventually caught by Batman and Batgirl in the comic books before graduating to the super villain ranks and becoming an assassin for hire. In Batman: Arkham Origins, Copperhead is an extremely agile female assassin who is after the outrageously large bounty on Batman's head. Copperhead thinks she is the one who will be collecting that bounty and sets her sights on that large payday. Batman: Arkham Origins takes place several years before the events of Batman: Arkham Asylum and Batman: Arkham City. Players will take up the cape and cowl as the unrefined cape crusader in his way to becoming the Dark Knight. Batman has a long and winding road ahead of him, and there are many super villains in the way, including Copperhead. Batman: Arkham Origins hits shelves October 25, 2013 o

New Saints Row IV trailer celebrates Johnny Gat’s return

See Johnny Gat in action in this brand new Saints Row IV trailer!

Yesterday, we reported to you that Johnny Gat has come back to Saints Row IV and being voiced by Daniel Dae Kim. Today, Deep Silver released a brand new Saints Row IV trailer highlighting the Gat's return to the franchise and kicking Zin butt the only way Johnny Gat can. While it's still unclear as to why or how Johnny Gat came back to life in the game, I'd speculate that it'd be a similar scenario like Oleg in Saints Row: The Third where the Zin are trying to clone him, seeing as how he's a superior human being. Or I'm just going all nuts and speculating all over the place because of the plethora of Saints Row IV media that's been released over the past few weeks. Can you tell I'm hyped? Saints Row IV comes out on August 20th for Xbox 360, PS3, and PC.

Microsoft confirms that Xbox One games can be played while downloading

Microsoft finally announces the ability to play Xbox One games while they download, a message Sony got across early to the gaming public.

Microsoft has announced that Xbox One owners can officially play their games on the console as they are being downloaded from Xbox Live. During the Xbox One press conference, Microsoft stated that all disc based games must be installed onto the console and that gamers will be able to play those games while they are being installed. What they didn't mention is if the same would apply to games downloaded from Xbox Live and now it has been confirmed. Playing games while they install is also available on the PlayStation 4 as well. Sony did a better job at getting this message across to gamers during their press conferences regarding the PlayStation 4's specifications and capabilities. Microsoft hasn't been as forthcoming with the same type of information, that's why this information is being announced again today. We already know that when it comes to delivering a coherent and clear branding message about the Xbox One, Microsoft has dropped the ball. They failed to explain why their str

Marc Whitten admits that their Xbox One digital strategy could’ve been communicated better

In a recent discussion, Xbox One’s chief product officer admits that communicating their ideas to consumers could be better.

Xbox One's chief product officer Marc Whitten, in a recent chat with IGN, acknowledged that the company hasn't done a good job of communicating their digital strategy to consumers. This statement was in reaction to the intense public and media scrutiny that Microsoft's Xbox One has taken over the past several weeks since its announcement. "We've got to just talk more, get people understanding what our system is. It's sort of shame on us that we haven't done as good of a job as we can to make people feel like [a digital future is] where we're headed. I see people feeling like we've moved away from digital, when certainly I don't believe that's the case." During the conversation, Marc Whitten clarified that while the Family Sharing feature won't be available at launch, there certainly is a possibility that it can be added back into the system later much like how the Xbox 360's dashboards added more functionality to the system over time. "We took some feedback and realized there was

Join Max as he searches the wastelands for the bandits who stole his interceptor. It doesn’t take a hero to change things, it just takes Mad Max.

Avalanche Studios and WB Games released a new gameplay video for their 2014 title Mad Max. This post-E3 video shows Max as he wanders through the wasteland surviving any way he can and driving his new interceptor, the Magnum Opus. Avalanche Studios has created an open world game featuring Max and his trademark double-barrel shotgun, a new interceptor for vehicle combat, and marauding hordes of insane bandits who want nothing more then to take out Mad Max. Max will also use hand to hand combat to take on his enemies using new weapons like the boomstick as he attempts to recover his former interceptor which was stolen by bandits. Mad Max is set to launch sometime during 2014 for the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, PC, Xbox 360, and Xbox One. Avalanche Studios went through a bit of controversy after the game was debuted at E3 when it was announced that an American actor would be playing the voice of the Australian Max. They have since corrected this by announcing that they will hire an Aus

Duke Nukem Forever is finally released - Can you believe that this game finally came out after a little over a decade of declaring the game to be vaporware? And it’s been finished by Gearbox Software, no less? 4. The release of the GameCube in Japan - This might come as a surprise to many people seeing as how I’m generally the most critical of Nintendo in the bunch, but I saw a lot of promise coming from the GameCube when it was released in Japan. The system had Luigi’s Mansion, Super Smash Bros. Melee, and Pikmin all within the launch window and these imaginative games really showed that the system, despite being underpowered, can deliver some really engaging experiences. I should also point out that the GameCube was ATI’s first fora

Magic 2014: Duels of the Planeswalkers – Sealed Bait and Switch

Sealed mode, the most exciting new feature of Magic 2014: Duels of the Planeswalkers, is also the most disappointing.

One of the most exciting new features in Magic 2014: Duels of the Planeswalkers is the sealed mode. For the first time in the series, players can build a deck from cards randomly drawn from booster packs and try their luck against other players or the single player sealed campaign. Eager to try it out, I went straight into it after starting up the game for the first time. My initial packs were not impressive. I didn’t get a single mythic rare card in any of them, and the rares I did get were underwhelming (kind of like my luck when buying real cards). Still, playing with cards you might not normally use is part of the appeal of this kind of deck building, so I made the best of it and put together a white and black deck. There were not enough cards to form a single color deck from my starting grabs, but that didn’t seem to be a problem for my first opponent in the sealed campaign who played with a single colored blue deck. By the end of the battle I was sure of one thing: my o

Grand Theft Auto V jacks HD space with mandatory 8GB install

Grand Theft Auto V will require a mandatory 8 GB install for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, robbing gamers of some much needed HD space.

Rockstar Games are forcing everyone who wants to play Grand Theft Auto V to install 8 GB of game data to their HD in order to play the game. The 8 GB install is required because of the massive amount of data needed to play the game smoothly. One of the biggest reasons for the mandatory install is Grand Theft Auto V's ability to switch between characters at a moment's notice. Grand Theft Auto V is the largest and most ambitious game we have yet created, and takes full advantage of every ounce of processing power available in the current generation of consoles. In order to provide the best possible experience for such a massive and detailed world, the game will have installation requirements on both Xbox 360 and PlayStation®3 systems. For Xbox 360, Grand Theft Auto V will ship on two discs; Disc 1 will be used for a one-time mandatory install and Disc 2 will be used to play the game. After the install, players will be able to enjoy both Grand Theft Auto V and Grand Theft Auto Online wi

Telltale’s The Walking Dead: 400 Days infects again

Telltale’s The Walking Dead: 400 Days tells the story of five separate characters over 400 days and wraps it all up in one episode.

For those of you who haven't finished Telltale's The Walking Dead, you better hurry up. The Walking Dead: 400 Days is a single season episode that will bridge the gap between seasons 1 and seasons 2, delivering 5 all new stories to devour along the way. The events of The Walking Dead: 400 Days will play out between 5 new characters over 400 days. Each character will have their own separate story to tell that can be played in any order. Just like the decisions made through season 1 of The Walking Dead affected subsequent episodes, decisions made in The Walking Dead: 400 Days will affect season 2. Although players do not have to have played or completed season 1, Telltale recommends that they do so first. The Walking Dead is one of those rare games that comes along and manages to captivate the player fully engrossing them into the story. This DLC was one of the games I got to see demoed at E3 and from what little they offered, it was awesome. What Makes Survival Horror Games Scary?

What makes survival horror good; is it the story, the suspense or even the monsters? When they all come together, they make for an excellent game.

Before there were survival horror video games, there were 18th century novels that focused their stories on witches, vampires, werewolves, ghosts and demonic pacts. These early Gothic Horror novels were not only unorthodox for their time but controversial and began with The Castle of Otranto (1764) by Horace Walpole. The Gothic Horror genre continued on into the 19th Century with more well known writers and novels like Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (1818), Edgar Allan Poe's short stories, Robert Louis Stevenson's Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde (1886), Oscar Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray (1890) and Bram Stoker's Dracula (1897). The tradition of frightening the viewer continued into new mediums such as film, television and video games. What makes horror games scary? That all depends on who you are talking to. Different things frighten different people. Some of the more important aspects of horror in video games tend to be story, suspense and the monster (a.k.a. that thing you

Don Mattrick, the President of Interactive Entertainment Business at Microsoft is headed to Zynga as the CEO in hopes of turning around the company.

Don Mattrick, the President of the Interactive Entertainment Business at Microsoft has been with the company since 2007. His responsibilities in the position--include Xbox 360, XBLA, Xbox One, Kinect, PC, Mobile, interactive entertainment and more--have come to an end. Mattrick has been the main voice at Microsoft regarding everything Xbox for several years and apparently it's time to move on. He has ruffled the feathers of consumers over the years saying the consumer should purchase a second HD for the Xbox 360 and backwards compatibility is just backwards. Microsoft's two press conferences announcing the Xbox One and its draconian DRM policies and stance on used games didn't win him any new fans. These policies were later overturned and dubbed the Xbox 180 by gaming media and consumers alike. I'm not saying that Don Mattrick is a bad guy, but Microsoft's DRM policies are one of the reasons I'm distancing myself from the Xbox. As bad as these policies are, they don't tell the succe

The Top 5: Most anticipated games of the current gen

With the next-gen taking up most of people’s mind share, we weigh on on the games still coming out in the current gen in 2013.

After all the next-gen excitement of E3 2013, it's easy to forget that the current gen still has a ton of great games to look forward to. If Tomb Raider, Bioshock Infinite and The Last of Us have proven, 2013 is already an amazing year for games and it doesn't really seem to that that streak will end any time soon. This week's Top 5 is our 5 most anticipated current-gen games. Alex - 5. Tearaway - Tearaway really did give me a lasting impression when I played it on the Vita. While Ted's excitement of the game has since wavered, the demo I played really gave me a good glimpse of what to expect when the final version comes out later in the year. I dare not declare that it's a system seller, but fans of platformers should definitely make sure to follow this game. 4. Super Mario 3D World - As critical as I am of Nintendo, I consider Super Mario 3D Land on the 3DS as one of the best experiences I've ever had playing a platformer in recent memory. In a time when being a

E3 2013: Fantasia has me in its musical grip

Fantasia: Music Evolved proves that Harmonix has a firm grasp of Microsoft’s Kinect technology.

No one has really made a good Kinect game except Harmonix. Their knowledge of the camera and effective ways to use it is matched by no one. After three Dance Central titles, Harmonix announced they were working on something else. Shortly before E3 they revealed Fantasia: Music Evolved, a rhythm game based on and inspired by one of Disney's most classic movies, Fantasia. The game is played similarly to Elite Beat Agents or Ouendan. Indicators will appear on the TV screen, telling you which way you need to wave your hand. You just need to time it correctly so that when a shooting star hits the thick end of the indicator, that's when the move starts registering. The song that Harmonix was showing off during the demo was Bohemian Rhapsody from Queen. This is a song I know very well, and I was eager to play. The unique feature of Fantasia: Music Evolved is that the music you are playing can be remixed on the fly. At certain points in the song, you can opt for a more acoustic

On Wednesday, June 26th, Magic 2014 - Duels of the Planeswalkers will be released on PC (Steam), Xbox 360 (XBLA), PlayStation 3 (PSN) and on iOS and Android devices.
