Nintendo Direct 2/14 New Announcement Roundup

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata donned a green cap in honor of Luigi in today’s Nintendo Direct. Apparently, 2013 will be the year of Luigi, because in addition to Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon, we’re getting a new Mario and Luigi RPG called Mario & Luigi: Dream Team, coming this summer. This one takes place in… Luigi’s dreams? Well, the last one took place inside Bowser’s body, so this actually might be less weird. There’s also going to be significant DLC coming for New Super Mario Brothers U, entitled New Super Luigi U. Players will control only Luigi, and we are told that levels are going to be significantly reworked. Price and release date is yet unknown.

Luigi will also be appearing in a new Mario Golf title for 3DS, Mario Golf World Tour, which is coming this summer from perennial Mario Golf developer Camelot. Mario Golf has always been a solid title whenever it has appeared, and I still have fond memories of the Game Boy Color version.

Animal Crossing New Leaf, which has been out in Japan for some time, was finally dated by Nintendo of America. You’ll be able to finally ignore that jerk, Tom Nook, because this time, you’re the mayor! The game will release on June 9.

Nintendo also had some new, upcoming 3DS eShop titles to announce in this Nintendo Direct, like puzzle game Kersploosh (March 7), Dillon’s Rolling Western: The Last Ranger (March 11), rhythm action game Harmoknight (March 28), and a new Mario and Donkey Kong game, Mario and Donkey Kong: Minis on the Move, with no release date given.

Existing Nintendo 3DS eShop games are going on sale. Effective immediately, and for one week, Bit.Trip.Saga, a collection of the first 6 Bit.Trip.Games, is marked down to $10 from $15. Each week after, a new game will be on sale:

  • Feb 21: CrashMo (Reg price $8.99, Sale price $5.99)
  • Feb 28: Fractured Soul (Reg price $11.99, Sale price $7.99)
  • Mar 7: Sakura Samurai: Art of the Sword (Reg price $6.99, Sale price $4.99)
  • Mar 14: Ketzal’s Corridors (Reg price $6.99, Sale price $4.99)
  • Mar 21: Mutant Mudds (Reg price $8.99, Sale price $5.99)

The final game announcement for today’s Nintendo Direct was that Donkey Kong Country Returns, which was a Holiday 2010 title for the Nintendo Wii, is seeing a 3DS release. Hopefully this version will smooth out some of the rough edges of the otherwise solid game, like needlessly blowing on things, or needlessly blowing on other things.

In other news, this Nintendo Direct announced a new promotion. If you buy a 3DS XL, and a copy of Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon, or Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity, and register them on Club Nintendo, you can have a free downloadable copy of one of five games:

  • Super Mario 3D Land
  • Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask
  • Art Academy: Lessons for Everyone
  • Star Fox 64 3D
  • Freakyforms Deluxe: Your Creations, Alive!

In non-3DS news, Nintendo also announced that the Wii U will have a new app. Wii Street U, the WIi U implementation of Google Maps, is available now, and is free for a limited time.

  1. Good grief, if keeps offering more “Nintendo” games on the 3Ds, I won’t have a reason to get a PSVita anymore, Mario Golf for me. So with the new Luigi mode, does Luigi plays like in lost level, jumps higher, but at the same time hard to control, lol… It’s a good day to have a 3Ds(XL), and also just pre-ordered Project x Zone for me, yes…
