StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm Sells 1.1M, Blizzard Says Thank You

In a press release, Blizzard Entertainment has announced that StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm has sold more than 1.1 million copies through retail and digital sales in its first two days of availability.

“We want to thank the global StarCraft community for the incredible passion and support they’ve shown for Heart of the Swarm,” said Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment. “In addition to a brand-new single-player campaign, we added a ton of enhancements with this expansion to make StarCraft II even more fun to play, and more exciting to watch. We’re pleased to see gamers and eSports fans around the world enjoying Heart of the Swarm.”

On March 11th, Blizzard hosted over 21 hours of live broadcasts throughout the world with thousands attending the official launch events in person and over 1.1 million viewers watching online. 1.1 million must be Blizzard’s lucky number, because that’s also the total number of viewers that watched the StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm tournament at the Major League Gaming Winter Championship in Dallas, Texas. Twitch reported a peak of 157,000 concurrent viewers during that event.

Thrilled by the “overwhelming positive” reception to StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm, Blizzard thanked all of the fans and supporters of the franchise in a post on their battle.net website.

We’d like to thank Team Liquid and Sean “Day[9]” Plott for their huge roles with the global stream and our Irvine community event. Thanks also go out to all who contributed content for broadcast on the stream; your creativity was much appreciated. And of course, we’d like to recognize OGN, GomTV, ESL, Twitch, the pro players, casters, hosts, sponsors, and others who helped make the event so successful. The spirit of collaboration was unprecedented and amazing, making this a launch we will remember for years to come.

StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm has been rated T for Teen by the MSRB and is available for $39.99. As it is an expansion pack, it requires StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty to play. For all the details about the game and its features, check out our review.
