On the Horizon: Guacamelee!

After the insane month of March with Tomb Raider, God of War: Ascension, Gears of War: Judgment and Bioshock Infinite, things are finally settling down. The good news is that we have the promising indie title, Guacamelee! from Drinkbox Studios to focus on.

Guacamelee! is a new action-platformer in which players take the role of Juan Aguacate, who sets out to save the world when El Presidente’s Daughter is kidnapped by an Evil Charro Skeleton named Carlos Calaca. Juan is killed during their first confrontation and is resurrected as a masked Mexican wrestler who can pass between the world of the living and the world of the dead. With gameplay in the style of later Castlevanias and Metroid, with a gigantic map, upgrades that allow access to previously inaccessible areas, an interesting art style, and a unique cast of characters, Guacamelee! looks like it could be something special. And it releases exclusively for PlayStation 3 and Vita on April 9th in North America and April 10th in Europe and Australia. Guacamelee! will cost $14.99, supports Cross-Buy for the two Sony platforms and will feature couch co-op.

Also out this week is Age of Empires II: HD Edition by Hidden Path Studios. The HD remake of the 1999 PC and Mac RTS hit will be available exclusively on Steam and will purportedly feature improved graphics, widescreen support and new multiplayer options. Age of Empires II: HD Edition releases on Tuesday April 9th for $19.99, with a limited time price of $17.99 for early purchasers.

This week on Gamer Horizon, Chris will be weighing in on the role of the silent protagonist versus ones that are fully voiced in an article titled, “The End of Gordon Freeman.” We’ll also be seeing Ted hammering out his Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate review after weeks of intense gameplay. Lastly, I will be addressing game journalism’s sudden turn against video game violence, more specifically, that of Tomb Raider and Bioshock Infinite. And in the midst of all of that content, we should hopefully get some game time in! Should be a interesting week to say the very least.
