Independent developer Gears for Breakfast launched a Kickstarter for their new game called A Hat in Time. If you’re a fan of the Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker or Nintendo 64 games in general, then you’ll find a lot to love in this game. Developed in the style of Nintendo 64 platformers and influenced by games like Banjo Kazooie, Super Mario 64 and Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker, the game stars a character simply named “Hat Kid” as she makes her way through time to stop the evil villain known only as “Mustache Girl.”
The game is billed as a loot collecting platformer and looks a lot like a cross between Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker and Super Mario Sunshine. Hat Kid has the ability to double jump and carries an umbrella that doubles as a pogo-stick and hook-shot. Just by watching the video, the game looks fun to play and has a charming quality to it. Hat Kid wears different hats throughout the video and we will have to see if each hat comes with special abilities.
The kickstarter for A Hat in Time began on May 29, 2013 and will end June 28, 2013. There are two videos released for the game, one featuring gameplay while the other shows gameplay and commentary from director Jonas Kaerlev. The Kickstarter offers several stretch goals including developer commentary at $40.000, Co-op at $50.000, a 6th bonus chapter at $80.000, full voice acting at $95.000, and a 7th bonus chapter at $110.000. The game will be between 10 and 20 hours long depending on the Kickstarter funding. At the time of this writing, the Kickstarter is at $45,178 which surpassed the $30,000 pledged goal and it currently has 1,598 backers. A Hat in Time is scheduled for a February 2014 release date on PC through Steam. As huge Nintendo fans, Indy dev Gears of Breakfast also want to release their game on the Wii U, but they’re not making that part of their stretch goals nor do they know if it is feasible as of yet.
