Update 3/19/2013: Origin has been updated. Players with activated copies of SimCity should be prompted to choose their free game after updating Origin.
Original Story: After the troubling launch of SimCity, EA had some making up to do. With that in mind, they apologized and announced that a free game would be made available to registered owners of SimCity, but they did not reveal the list of games to choose from until now. According to this post on the EA Forums, anyone that activates a copy of SimCity by March 25, 2013 at 11:59 PM PDT will be eligible for one from game from the list below.
- Battlefield 3 (Standard Edition)
- Bejeweled 3
- Dead Space 3 (Standard Edition)
- Mass Effect 3 (Standard Edition)
- Medal of Honor Warfighter (Standard Edition)
- Need For Speed Most Wanted (Standard Edition)
- Plants vs. Zombies
- SimCity 4 Deluxe Edition
That last one should raise a few eyebrows. SimCity 4 Deluxe Edition contains a variety of features that are absent from this recent SimCity game. The new game has no subways, the size of the land that cities can be built upon is small, and cities cannot be built adjacent to each other, preventing players from building a region wide metropolis. Many fans consider SimCity 4 Deluxe Edition to be the better game, so it’s ironic–though not necessarily surprising–that SimCity 4 Deluxe Edition is one of the choices on this list.
Over the next few days, fans that qualify for this promotion will receive an e-mail with details on how to get their free game. The free game will only be available until March 30, 2013 at 11:59 PM PDT, so don’t delay once you receive your e-mail from EA.
