On May 15 2013, Sony Computer Entertainment will celebrate the 15th anniversary of the ‘real driving simulator’ Gran Turismo at Silverstone Grand Prix Circuit in the UK. Gran Turismo was first released in Japan in December 1997 by developer Polyphony Digital and produced by Kazunori Yamauchi. Over the years, the franchise has gone on to sell over 68 million copies of the game world wide making Gran Turismo the best-selling PlayStation game ever. During the event, Yamauchi-san will be providing an update on the future of Gran Turismo. It is assumed that Yamauchi-san will be making an announcement about Gran Turismo 6 and that it will be on PlayStation 4, but we won’t know that until May 15.
Since its inception in 1997, not only has the number of cars increased but so has the level of detail in the way the cars look and perform. Sony has forged strong relationships with the numerous car manufacturers such as Audi, BMW, Ford, Honda, Jaguar, KTM, Mercedes Benz, Nissan, Tesla and Toyota. Not only are these some of the manufactures that have cars in the game but they will also have cars at the Gran Turismo event at Silverstone.
“The Gran Turismo franchise continues to be extremely important to PlayStation,” explained Jim Ryan, president of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe. “We felt that 15 years of GT was an event worth celebrating along with our colleagues from the Americas, Asia and Japan. We are very grateful to our manufacturer partners for helping us to bring together a fantastic event. As well as experiencing the development of the game and comparing the virtual and real, it will be a pleasure to see Yamauchi-san and hear what’s next for Gran Turismo.”
