Vanguard Games Announces Halo: Spartan Assault

Vanguard Games announced yesterday that they’re developing Halo: Spartan Assault, a brand new IP based in the Halo universe. The game is being developed in conjunction with 343 Industries and published by Microsoft Games Studios. Vanguard Games is based in Amsterdam and have released the previous titles Gatling Gears and Greed Corp. Halo: Spartan Assault launches this July for $6.99 and is only playable for Windows 8 devices (tablets, phones, PC). The game is a top down action shooter and takes place between the events of Halo 3 and Halo 4. You’ll take on the role of either Commander Sarah Palmer or Spartan Davis as they take on their first Spartan Ops assignment aboard the UNSC Infinity. You’ll be fighting new battles against the Covenant and delve deeper in the back story of the Human Covenant war.

Halo: Spartan Assault was created for fans of the franchise, along with newcomers to the Halo series, and is designed to have a pick up and play experience. The game offers 25 unique single player mission allowing player to compete with their friends with leaderboards and the ability to hone their skills in weekly challenges. In Halo: Spartan Assault players can collect more than 40 achievements and medals. Player who have a Spartan Ops career can earn extra experience points (XP), new achievements, and emblems for your Halo 4 Spartan.

In addition to the game, 343 Industries is working on a 3 part comic book titled Halo: Initiation 2 with Dark Horse comics. The comic follows the story of Commander Sarah Palmer, how she became a Spartan IV, and leads into the events of Halo: Spartan Assault. From what I can tell in the video, this game has the same top down view as Halo Wars. As comparisons go, that’s probably it. It’s nice to see Halo make the jump to other genre types other than the first person shooter. Honestly, I’m more interested in seeing what else this game offers.
