Plants Vs. Zombies 2 to be released on other platforms than iOS

I’ll be the first to admit that I was thrilled by the announcement that Plants Vs. Zombies 2: It’s About Time was going to be released this Summer. I even took a trip down memory lane, looking back at what made the original Plants Vs. Zombies great. I assumed that the game would be released on a variety of platforms and handheld devices, so when the news came that the game would be releasing exclusively on iOS devices, it knocked the wind out of me. I don’t own an iOS device.

I poured over the press release, searching frantically for anything to indicate that this was merely a timed exclusive or that more information would be provided about other platforms at a later date. Finding nothing of the sort, I contacted Garth Chouteau, Sr. Director, Worldwide PR at PopCap Games, and asked about what plans, if any, there were to release the game on other platforms. Here is Garth’s reply:

“We’ll be making PvZ 2 available on iOS devices exclusively at launch, with the game being adapted to other platforms/devices later. The sequence and timetable for those future platforms is not information we’re providing just yet.”

Okay, so it’s not a detailed list of future platforms or release dates, but at least we can confirm that Plants Vs. Zombies 2: It’s About Time will make its way to other platforms and devices at some point in the (hopefully) not so distant future. Whew! Was getting nervous there for a while. Now I just have to be patient!

In the meantime, if you are the happy owner of an iOS device, you’ll be able to pick up Plants Vs. Zombies 2: It’s About Time on July 18th, and you won’t even have to pay for it! The game will be free to play on iOS devices, allowing players to play through every level of the game without spending a dime. Though if you absolutely insist on spending money, Crazy Dave will be happy to help you with that and provide you with some optional upgrades. I can’t help but to wonder if the game will be free to play on other platforms and devices as well, or if they will opt to go with a more traditional pricing model. Appropriately, it’s just a matter of time before we find out.
