Today Blizzard finally announced the pricing for Hearthstone: Curse of Naxxramas, and now that I’ve compared the cost in gold coins of this new content to the cost in gold coins of Expert Packs, I’ve come to the conclusion that you shouldn’t waste your coins–unless you already have all the expert cards you need, anyway. But I’m getting ahead of myself; first, let’s take a look at the pricing.
Naxxramas will be divided into 5 wings, and the first of those wings will be free for “roughly a month,” so for the purposes of this article, I am going to assume that you got the first wing for free, and that the total cost to buy Naxxramas with USD will be $19.99 for the bundle of the 4 remaining wings. We also know that 15 Expert Packs can be purchased for the same price of $19.99.
Now let’s talk about gold coins. To buy those four wings of Naxxramas, it would cost 2800 coins, or 700 coins per wing. At the same time, the cost of buying 15 Expert Packs in coins would be 1500 coins.
Finally, let’s put it all together:
15 Expert Packs = $19.99
4 Wings of Naxx = $19.99
15 Expert Packs = 1500 G
4 Wings of Naxx = 2800 G
As you can see, in dollars, 4 wings of Naxxramus costs the same amount as 15 Expert Packs. But in gold coins, the cost of 4 Wings of Naxxramus is far more expensive than the 15 Expert Packs.
If you are trying to get the most out of your hard earned gold coins, and you don’t mind investing some money into Hearthstone, the choice is clear. Spend coins on packs (or Arena runs) and spend dollars on Naxx! Of course, if you don’t want to spend any real money, none of this really matters. But as someone that has been saving all of my gold coins for the last few months with the hope of buying Naxxramus, I’m surprised that it makes more sense to just buy a pile of Expert Packs. Hopefully this article will save you a few coins (if not dollars)!
